Our Classes for preschool and school aged children

Emsworth, Hampshire, Saturdays during the term time

The 10:50 am class is for those aged 7-9 (some musical experience an advantage for this class, as it is a more advanced class and builds on the musical skills learnt in the previous two levels). However, I also run a beginners class for 9- 11 year olds currently for home educated children on Tuesday mornings. This will move to Wednesday after school if enquiries are received from parents of schoolchildren. The preschool class for 2 – 4 year-olds runs from 10:20 till 10:50 am (all welcome, no assessment required).

Additional classes at other times in other areas will be made available if there is sufficient demand.

Venue: Emsworth Community Centre, North Street, North Street, Emsworth, Hampshire, PO10 7DD

“Colin loved the class – very pleased to be back [after the lockdown period] (& then got a bit upset afterwards when I explained we didn’t have music again the next day………). Thank you very much for running it.”

Class sessions are mainly fun singing and movement activities, based on Kodály and Dalcroze teaching principles. Live piano playing, and recorded music help the children internalise pulse, rhythm, metre and more. Other examples of things we do are moving with scarves to internalise phrasing or using a parachute to reinforce the idea of pitch.

We use egg shakers, ankle bells and claves with the pre-school children, and more sophisticated instruments with older children. We also use a ‘magic box’ and sometimes have real orchestral instruments in class for children to experience

The children move from a subconscious understanding to a semiconscious through to a fully conscious understanding of the various elements of music.

Prices per family are between £6 with just £2.50 for each additional child (even if they are not in the same class). .

Discounts are also available for prompt payment and for referring friends.

The first session is always free to newcomers to give time to settle in.

‘Our son started music classes with Vincent almost a year ago now, aged 2. He thoroughly enjoys the class & looks forward to it every week. He often sings the songs he’s learnt at home & it’s never a struggle to get him out the door. He loves it. When we ask him what his favourite thing about music class is, he says: “I love to sing.” ‘
